05 Nov What I’ll miss about Houston!
So a few days ago we moved out of our apartment in Houston and our next house will be back in the Netherlands, Amsterdam. We only lived in Texas for 6 months but I have to admit that the city stole my heart. Now I don’t think that this city is a place that you should add to your bucket list for a city trip. But if you ever want to move and live for a couple of months or years in America, make sure you consider Houston. Why? Well let me give you 10 things that I’ll miss about Houston and why I loved living here!
First of all, the people that live in Houston are super super friendly, welcoming, relaxed and outgoing. It was for my husband and me very easy to connect with the American people and we made a couple of really good friends! The blogger girls are amazing as they were very helpful, sweet, outgoing and fun and I really want to thank them for their warm friendships!
Now most of the Houstonians don’t really like the weather, but I just loved the heat! For a girl from Amsterdam, where you have about 3 beach days a year, the Houstonian weather is the best! I could have breakfast at the pool every morning, bike to work every day in a tank top and shorts, and sit on a terrace until late in the evening. I experienced the weather as pure luxury (except when I had to shoot though – that was brutal)! So if you live in a cold, rainy and windy country like the Netherlands, you might want to move to a state like Texas.
As we love American sports, Houston was our place to be. We really liked watching baseball and we are therefor very excited that the Astros WON the World Series. American football is also one of our favourites, especially if you do the tailgating on the parking lot of the Texans before. And of course, the Rockets are the basketball team to cheer for in town! Finally, as a Houstonian you have to be a part of the Austin Grand Prix, which is only a 3 hours’ drive. This was one of the coolest experiences in my life!
As my colourful style reveals, I love colourful walls. And Houston’s Wall Art was therefore the perfect background for my pictures!
A couple of weeks ago I published my list of favourite restaurants in the city (see more here)! Because Wow, the food here is so good! If you don’t be careful, you will get really big as it is all just too good!
In Houston you’ll always find a fun outdoor event. From open air theatres in the weekends, food festivals, Rodeo, Renaissance festivals, etc. But also the beer gardens, like Axelrad and Kirby’s Ice House, are awesome to watch sports, play games, have food from food trucks and drink the best local beers!
The local supermarket, HEB is just amazing! I mean, this supermarket truly makes doing groceries joyful! The products are super fresh, the variety in products is big but not overwhelming and the prices are fair. Ohh and did I tell that you can pre-taste almost everything.
Houston is almost bilingual and you have the most incredible Tex Mex restaurants in this city. That is why I love the Mexican influence. You could always find me at El Tiempo for Margaritas and Fajitas, of course speaking in my best Spanish.
